US Based Extreme Action Troupe, STREB, visits Adelaide in March 2024
A mixture of slam dancing, human flight and a wild action sport, the physical feats of STREB EXTREME ACTION have been enthralling audiences since 1985. Founded by extraordinary ‘action architect’ Elizabeth Streb, the company has travelled, artistically as well as geographically, from the heights of the experimental dance world to the cutting edge of popular entertainment.
Extreme Action, a new art form invented by Streb, takes choreography beyond dance to defy gravity and pushes the human body to its limits. Using prototypic ‘Action Machines’ that move with and against them, her dancers become ‘Action Heroes’ who thrill, scare and delight their audiences.
Like modern-day gladiators, the performers throw their bodies about in acts of extreme athleticism and daring, swinging from hanging objects and launching off trampolines. The company’s international touring calendar has included performances at the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Théâtre du Châtelet and the Musée D’Orsay. The company has also taken its signature extreme action to iconic locations including Grand Central Station, Coney Island’s fairground, the Brooklyn Bridge Anchorage, Madison Square Garden, the mall outside the Smithsonian Institution, and now, Adelaide.
STREB EXTREME ACTION will be performing 8-11 March at the WOMAdelaide Festival held at Adelaide’s Botanic Park. Held on the traditional lands of the Kaurna People, WOMADelaide – World Of Music Arts & Dance – is an iconic open-air festival celebrating cultural discovery in the heart of Adelaide.
