Tasdance announces ‘Exposure!’ intensive

Tasdance recently announced their inaugural exclusive summer dance intensive Exposure! will take place in Launceston, Tasmania, Monday 7 to Friday 11 January, 2013. Culminating in a performance in front of potential employers, Exposure! is an opportunity for aspiring professionals to further their careers during a weeklong intensive that will be guided by Australian Dance Theatre dancer Kialea-Nadine Williams.

Exposure! will involve daily technique class, creative development of solo and group choreography and a chance to work on performance skills. An exclusive opportunity for participants, the week culminates in an informal performance in front of some of Australia’s leading artistic directors, choreographers and dance practitioners. In a competitive industry, the chance to perform in an intimate setting with potential employers ensures Exposure! is a strategic career opportunity for young performers.

“Tasdance has a long history of providing emerging dancers and choreographers with their first break into the contemporary dance industry,” said Tasdance Artistic Director Annie Greig. “The development of Exposure! is another vehicle that allows the company to assist dancers with the opportunity of getting in front of potential employers.”

Responsibility for guiding the week goes to Kialea-Nadine Williams, who is well known to Australian dance audiences through her extensive career with ADT since 2008. Prior to her working in Australia, Williams was with Phoenix Dance Theatre for six years after graduating from the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance in the UK. Whilst dancing in England, Williams was awarded UK’s National Critic Circle Spotlight Award for Best Female Dancer in 2007 for her performance of Harmonica Breakdown, choreographed by Jane Dudley.

“We are so thrilled to have the services of Kialea-Nadine available for Exposure! She has such a distinguished career with Australian Dance Theatre and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Tasmania. I know that she will create such a positive environment for the Exposure! participants to excel,” Greig said.

Beginning on 7 January 2013, the summer intensive is timed to give aspiring dancers another opportunity to train prior to returning to tertiary study or venturing into the independent dance sector.

“It sets a young dancer up well for the year. The intensive is intentionally early in the year, as it will go a long way toward highlighting to us, and to other invited AD’s and choreographers, who the motivated dancers are, who are the ones that are willing to leave the beach early and get back into the studio and work hard. Displaying that sort of attitude counts for a lot in this industry,” Greig said.

Exposure! will take place at Tasdance studio, located at 197 Wellington Street, Launceston, Tasmania. With limited places available, registration for Exposure! is essential.
