NGV Kids on Tour 2023 extends to 130+ venues across Victoria

NGV Kids on Tour 2023 will be the largest to date, bringing free art-making activities, games, and workshops to more than 130 venues throughout Victoria including galleries, libraries, paediatric hospitals, neighbourhood houses, migrant resource centres, and community organisations.

NGV Kids on Tour is an integral part of the NGV’s year-round program, reinforcing the Gallery’s commitment to providing opportunities for communities across Victoria to gather and connect through making art. The 2023 program will bring engaging activities to all corners of the state from Horsham to Bendigo, and Warracknabeal to West Gippsland.

Drawing on this year’s theme ‘LET’S MAKE ART’, NGV Kids on Tour 2023 shares popular activities from the 2022 NGV kids exhibition Making Art: Imagine Everything is Real, which celebrated the work of some of the most innovative European artists of the twentieth century including Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Natalia Goncharova and Remedios Varo. Drawing inspiration from the world around them, the activities invite children to create drawings, sculptures, poems, portraits, collages and one-of-a-kind creatures.

The NGV Kids on Tour 2023 program includes: Make a Sculpture – a hands-on activity, where kids are invited to create their own three-dimensional tabletop sculpture reminiscent of Picasso’s maquettes; Make a Collage – inspired by the work of Georges Braque, children will experiment with colour and shape to cut and paste their own colourful masterpieces; Make a Poem or Portrait – inspired by artist and poet Natalia Goncharova, children draw a portrait using pencils and oil pastels then write an accompanying poem; Make a Creature –a group activity inspired by Surrealist artist Remedios Varo, children will take turns to draw parts of a creature, resulting in wild and original creations; and Just Imagine – where children transform colourful activity sheets into a new scene, creature or object, drawing inspiration from artist Oscar Dominguez’s printing technique called ‘decalcomania’.

NGV Kids on Tour also invites teenagers to learn about the creative practices of emerging artists and build their own art portfolios through activities developed with Melbourne-based artists. In Teens Create a Portrait Melbourne-based artist Archer Davis leads young artists in learning how to draw a subject’s face while highlighting individuality through character, gestures, and movements. Inspired by Anime and comic books, Lama Lama artist, Rubii Red creates characters that speak to issues which are important to her and her community. In Teens Character Design Rubii Red shares her techniques to help teens draw their own character.

Tony Ellwood AM, Director, NGV, said: ‘Since its inaugural year in 2014, the Kids on Tour Program has demonstrated the NGV’s commitment to providing Victorians of all ages with the opportunity to engage with art, design and culture from Australia and around the world. The 2023 program will be our largest yet, extending a diverse range of free art-making activities for kids, teens and families to over 130 community organisations right across Victoria.’

NGV Kids on Tour 2023 takes place in January 2023 at venues across regional and metropolitan Victoria. For individual program dates visit NGV.MELBOURNE.
