‘The Bodyguard’ musical to tour in 2017

THE BODYGUARD musical to tour Australia in 2017Producers Michael Harrison, David Ian and John Frost recently announced that the international award-winning hit musical The Bodyguard will reach Australian theatres in 2017. The Australian tour will commence in Sydney in April next year.

A “brilliant” (The Times), breathtakingly romantic thriller, The Bodyguard includes a whole host of Whitney Houston’s greatest hits, including “Queen of the Night,” “Saving All My Love”, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and one of the greatest hit songs of all time – “I Will Always Love You.”

Based on the smash-hit Warner Bros 1992 film starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner and written by the acclaimed, Oscar-nominated screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan (Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Big Chill, The Empire Strikes Back), The Bodyguard features a book by Academy Award-winner Alexander Dinelaris.

In the story, former Secret Service agent turned bodyguard Frank Farmer is hired to protect superstar singer Rachel Marron from an unknown stalker. Each expects to be in charge – what they don’t expect is to fall in love.

The world premiere production of The Bodyguard commenced previews at London’s Adelphi Theatre in November 2012, starring Grammy and Tony Award winner Heather Headley as Rachel Marron. With numerous sell-out extensions, it ran for nearly two years, and a UK tour commenced in February 2015. Subsequent productions have opened in the Netherlands and Germany. A West End revival began in July at the Dominion Theatre, and a North American tour is beginning this year, starring Grammy nominated superstar Deborah Cox.

“I’m thrilled to that Australia will finally get to see this sensational, multi-million-dollar musical,” said John Frost on behalf of his co-producers. “When David Ian approached me in 2012 to co-produce the world premiere in London, I jumped at the chance to be involved. This iconic story and those soaring ballads were itching to be made into a stage musical, and its success over the past four years has proved it. The original production was extended many times with audiences flocking to the show, and the subsequent UK tour has broken box office records at most of the theatres where it’s played. I know Australian audiences will love The Bodyguard as much as I do.”
