Welcome to Boogie Wonderland! Velvet Rewired to tour Australia
Born in the sequins and discotheque dust of the Adelaide Fringe Festival in 2015, the international Australian success story, Velvet Rewired, returns to theatres around Australia in a new, reinvented production that continues the extravaganza of music, dance and circus!
This big, bold, and beautiful production stars the iconic Marcia Hines as The Diva, Joe Accaria as The DJ and the spectacular Craig Reid as Hula Boy. They are joined by a cast of internationally acclaimed circus, dance performers and vocalists in a fusion of flawless glamour, glitz and jaw-dropping circus skills!
Moving from Boston to Sydney at 16 to join the Australian production of Hair, Marcia Hines has become Australia’s beloved musical treasure during a career spanning five decades and 22 album releases, selling 2.6 million copies.
This iconic national treasure shows no sign of letting up! The Sydney Festival in 2019 featured an original production, set in the streets of Paris titled Pigalle which was a sell-out success. In 2020, Marcia became ‘The Dragon’ in the Australian premiere season of Shrek The Musical, then returned to the Adelaide Fringe for the world premiere of Velvet Rewired. This production again had the public and critics alike referring to it as “The best show at The Fringe”.
An award-winning graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with Honours Music and Education degrees in orchestral percussion, Joe Accaria has worked extensively worldwide as a performer, session musician, composer, music producer and music director.
Joe is the Music Director for Velvet – Australian National Tour, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Sydney Opera House, Auckland Arts Festival and Norwegian Cruise Line. Other Music Director credits include Gypsy (Hayes Theatre Co), Marcia Hines – Disco Inferno, B-Girl Sydney Opera House, Bobby Fox – Four Seasons in One Night and iOTA – Young Hard and Solo for Sydney Festival and Pigalle, both debuted at the Sydney Festival.
Craig Reid aka ‘The Incredible Hula boy’ is the award winning, Scottish hula-hoop act and the undeniable king of the rings! With a Circus university degree in hula-hooping and an extensive background in gymnastics and dance he has taken to stages in cabarets, TV shows and variety theatres all around the world. Credited with ‘Best Specialty Act’ from the London Cabaret awards, ‘GOP Variete Comedy Award’ from the famous Soly Circo Circus festival and winner of the BBC TV talent show ‘The Slammer’.
Velvet has always been a nightclub, a state of mind, a fantasy! In the new world of Velvet Rewired, director Craig Ilott has reworked his magic to transform the production into a fresh, new, sparkling vision of dreams, life and fulfilment!
“A winning mix of nostalgia, dance music, and circus twizz,” said Sydney Morning Herald.
The tour kicks off 16 November in Brisbane at Raine & Horne Wynnum Spiegeltent, Wynnum Fringe. From Brisbane, they’ll travel to Perth, Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide, Hobart, Townsville, Newcastle, and finally Melbourne 26 April, 2023.
