Victorian Opera Journeys to the Emerald City in Il Mago Di Oz

Victorian Opera Journeys to the Emerald City in Il Mago Di Oz

Following inspired retellings on screen, as well as spin-off Broadway musicals, the land of Oz is reimagined yet again. Discover composer Pierangelo Valtinoni’s wondrous new Italian opera, Il Mago di Oz. The Victorian Opera is proud to present Il Mago Di Oz at the Palais Theatre, St Kilda August 27and 30.

Launched from the pages of L. Frank Baum’s classic The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy Gale’s journey down the yellow brick road has captured the imagination of children and adults alike since the novel was first published in 1900. Her encounters with the Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, and Witches – good and bad – are legendary.

This Australian premiere production will introduce Victorian Opera’s Emerging Artists and a specially trained children’s chorus. With an emphasis on childhood and its capacity to embrace the fantastic, Il Mago di Oz will speak directly to young people and to the child in all of us.

The Victorian Youth Orchestra and Victorian Opera Chamber Orchestra will combine to share the wondrous score by Valtinoni. Elizabeth Hill-Cooper directs.

Performances will take place at 7:30 pm on August 27 and 30. The production lasts 1 hour and 40 minutes with one interval. It is sung in Italian with English surtitles. Single tickets begin at $39 for adults. School tickets are $25 per student, with one free teacher ticket per group of 10 students.
