Top Level Training for Students With Expressions Dance Company

Expressions Dance Company Intensive studentsTwice a year, Queensland’s Expressions Dance Company (EDC) opens it doors to dance students for the Brisbane Contemporary Dance Intensive (BCDI).

The highly acclaimed intensive is now in its seventh year, and is the premier intensive training course for contemporary dance in Australia.

“BCDI has become a highlight in EDC’s calendar,” said EDC’s Artistic Director Natalie Weir. “The intensive workshops are designed to prepare up-and-coming dancers for a career in dance with an intense focus on contemporary dance, its techniques and the industry.”

Over the course of the intensive, students have the chance to work exclusively with EDC’s award-winning dancers, alongside a handpicked selection of guest teachers, to master their performance skills and deepen their ability to create unique and engaging dance while perfecting their technique.

This year’s Summer Intensive ran from 11-15 and 18-22 January, 2015. It was curated by internationally celebrated dance artist Amy Hollingsworth and featured Helpmann Award winner Kristina Chan and acclaimed independent artist and New Zealand Dance Company founding member, Craig Bary.

Together, the teaching team offered their personal insights, style and techniques in contemporary dance gained from a combined 50 years of international experience in the industry.

The Summer BCDI was divided into two programs, with courses catering to various experience levels and age groups. Students were invited to participate in either one or both weeks. Coming up from July 4-8 is the Winter Intensive – and applications are now open.

Aspire is a pre-tertiary training program for 13-17 year olds, designed to give greater confidence and an edge in auditions, and is ideal for dancers preparing for tertiary training.

Momentum is designed for emerging tertiary-level dancers aged 17 and above, creating pathways into the dance industry and focusing on developing a unique style as an artist.

Gabi, a past participant of the Pre-Tertiary Program said: “This intensive is completely focused on contemporary dance and all the elements attached to this style; it’s hard to find any other intensive like this around Australia.”

Courtney, another Tertiary Program student said: “Definite value for money, invaluable advice and skills learnt from current, seasoned professionals willing to share keys to success! Thank you for such a well-rounded contemporary intensive.”

The BCDI programs are limited to 20 participants each, with entry by application only. For more information or to apply, visit expressionsdancecompany.org.au or call EDC on 07 3257 4222.
