Special Events with The Australian Ballet
The Australian Ballet is currently presenting Stephen Baynes’ Swan Lake in Sydney through April 20. Almost immediately after, the company will open its contemporary program Vitesse on April 26 and then its classical program Symphony in C on April 29. All of these performances are taking place at the Sydney Opera House.
In addition to the company’s mainstage performances, there will be a series of 45-minute ballets presented. These will include the most famous section of Swan Lake (featuring the Black Swan), as well as a contemporary ballet with an electronic score. Plus the company is offering the chance to go behind the scenes and watch the dancers taking a class and receiving private coaching.
The special events are the perfect way to experience ballet and they run for an hour maximum at the Opera House.
The Black Swan program is set for 12:30 pm on Tuesday, April 12. Attendees can “meet ballet’s best bad girl” – the villainous Black Swan – and see how she tempts the Prince away from his true-love vow in a thrilling pas de deux.
Two days later on Thursday, April 14 at 11:30 am, the Behind-the-Scenes Tour presents exclusive access to the company’s elite ballet dancers. Viewers watch dancers taking class on stage, followed by a rare opportunity to see the coaching session of a principal couple.
A 45-minute performance of In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated choreographed by William Forsythe, one of the most celebrated contemporary choreographers of our time, will be presented Wednesday, May 4 at 12:30 pm. This electrifying performance is perfect for a lunch break. Watch as dancers explore the extreme limits of ballet technique to a Dutch electronic soundtrack.
