‘solid.states’ comes to Dancehouse

Arco Renz’ solid.statesComing to Dancehouse’s Sylvia Staehli Theatre on November 20-21 is German choreographer Arco Renz’ solid.states. In this work, the Belgium-based maverick places two accomplished dancers on an unstable moving platform.

This breathtaking and complex installation is the vibrating set for two powerful solos performed by the incredible Melbourne-based choreographer Melanie Lane and former Javanese court dancer Eko Supriyanto. solid.states borrows elements of their shared Javanese ancestry to explore individuality, freedom and identity in the context of Javanese tradition.

Pulsing with energy and precision, solid.states highlights the intrusion of Western pop culture in a traditional society such as the Javanese culture, tracing the interplay and underlying tremors that lie beneath the equally powerful forces of the global and the traditional.

Trained in Javanese court dancing since the age of 7, Eko Supriyanto is a leading dancer of his generation. He’s performed in major international productions (such as Peter Sellar’s Le Grand Macabre and John Adam’s opera A Flowering Tree) and was a featured dancer in Madonna’s 2001 Drowned World Tour.

Born from a Javanese mother, choreographer Melanie Lane recently relocated from Berlin, where she has been working since 2004 with various artists, including Arco Renz and Tino Seghal. She has performed in Antony Hamilton’s Black Project 1 and has more recently presented MERGE in Dance Massive 2015.

In solid.states, both performers share their divergent experiences and together explore how change ultimately and intimately de-stabilises.
