Sarah J. Ewing’s ‘Australia Home Land’

CityDance Resident Artist and Australian native Sarah J. Ewing is premiering her dance work Australia Home Land at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. on September 5 and 6. The performance is free to the public.

Australia Home Land, Ewing’s first full-length piece, was selected as one of two works commissioned in this year’s Kennedy Center Local Dance Commissioning Project.

In the work, five dancers struggle to co-exist on a dual-level set featuring a cross-section of Australia’s red earth. This unusual set uses the Millennium stage in a fresh and unexpected way. The tension created by the space is integral to the dancers interactions adding dimension to an already strong story.

Australia Home Land is Ewing’s contribution to a dialogue about the very human struggle to coexist and to re-contextualize our identities as part of a larger culture. Through Home Land, Ewing really asks viewers the question, “What defines home?”
