Lucy Guerin to lead final in-studio workshop as Artistic Director
Australian choreographer Lucy Guerin will lead a special three-day workshop for dancers in Melbourne this September, marking her final in-studio workshop as Artistic Director of Lucy Guerin Inc before she steps down from the role at the end of 2026.
Taking place Wednesday 30 September through Friday 2 October at WXYZ Studios in North Melbourne, the workshop will offer artists an opportunity to work directly with one of Australia’s leading contemporary choreographers and explore the movement practices and creative processes that have shaped her career.
Each day will begin with a contemporary dance class before moving into repertory, choreographic exploration, physical investigations, improvisation and creative tasks drawn from Guerin’s work. Participants will learn recent repertory from Lucy Guerin Inc works including Split and The Forest, taught by LGI Resident Director Tra Mi Dinh.
Guerin will also lead creative sessions exploring systems for generating new movement material, giving participants insight into her approach to choreography and collaboration.
The workshop comes at a significant point in Guerin’s career. She founded Lucy Guerin Inc in 2002 and has served as its Artistic Director for 25 years. Her work has earned an international reputation for its distinctive movement language and choreographic structures, with productions touring extensively throughout Australia and internationally.
Her recent work includes The Forest, which premiered at RISING Festival in June as part of the inaugural Australian Dance Biennale, alongside works including One Single Action, PENDULUM, How To Be Us, Metal and Attractor.
The workshop is open to tertiary students, recent graduates, independent dance artists, professional dancers and other committed dance practitioners. It is designed for artists interested in developing their physical practice while gaining a deeper understanding of choreographic processes.
The three-day workshop runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at WXYZ Studios, 130 Dryburgh Street, North Melbourne, in the Chloe Munro Studio. The cost is $250, with places limited.
Applications close Wednesday 9 September, with successful participants notified by Wednesday 16 September.
