Limited Places Remain for Lou Cope’s Doing Dramaturgy Australasia Online Course

Doing Dramaturgy – Australasia is an 8 week online night class (Tuesday evenings ACST 6- 9 pm, AEDT 6:30-9:30 pm), run by the brilliant Lou Cope, for choreographers and dramaturgs to work with Lou and each other to explore the practice and practicalities of dramaturgical thinking.

Open to a limited cohort of Australasian creatives, Doing Dramaturgy offers an opportunity to draw knowledge from Lou Cope’s internationally acclaimed multi-decade career. The course, hosted by Lou’s Centre of Applied Dramaturgy (CoAD), is for engaged choreographers and dramaturgs.

This course is for choreographers who want to engage in professional development, refresh or clarify their practice and get external input on their making strategies, and dramaturgs who want to learn from and with choreographers about the potential of their approach and forge relationships with new collaborators.

Applications are open until 18 March to join the Australasian course cohort, which features practitioners selected by Ausdance ACT, CoAD, Critical Path and Lucy Guerin Inc.

In addition to two bursaries already offered by Critical Path, Lou and CoAD are delighted to announce the opportunity for two additional practitioners to join the cohort with a sponsored place – One for dance artists based in greater Melbourne, Victoria, the Lucy Guerin Inc Bursary and another for ACT-based dance artists, the Ausdance ACT Bursary is also open

Both bursaries cover course costs for selected participants, who will be selected in a competitive process through application. For eligible practitioners interested in being considered for a bursary, this just needs to be indicated in application to CoAD.

Doing Dramaturgy will meet every Tuesday evening for 8 weeks beginning April 26. Participants will undertake two max – 60 minute 1:1 sessions with Lou before and after the course, plus some ‘homework’ between sessions

The Doing Dramaturgy virtual course leads participants through a variety of dynamic and engaging sessions with Lou and each other to: deepen their practice and mission; examine their making strategies; explore structure, composition, form, content and context; share experience, questions and challenges; and build relationships with each other.

Lou Cope, Dramaturg & Director of CoAD says, “I am so excited to be developing this course. For years people have asked me if such a course exists, or they’ve asked me for mentoring or shadowing opportunities which never feel deep or far-reaching enough. But now is the right time to get it all out there – share everything I’ve ever learned, read or experienced – and really help people dig deep into their dramaturgical thinking and practices, in a private, supportive, rigorous and accessible context.”

Garry Stewart – Artistic Director of Australian Dance Theatre and collaborator with Lou adds, “This course is a brilliant opportunity for artists to develop their understanding of dramaturgy with one of the UK’s leading dance dramaturgs. Working with Lou online was both a pleasure and inspiring, and it’s great that people across the world can now get access to her work and experience.”
