Join The Australian Ballet for World Ballet Day 2022

The Australian Ballet and The Royal Ballet in London invite you to World Ballet Day 2022, the biggest yet. Over 60 companies from 6 continents will come together on Wednesday 2 November 2022 to celebrate the power of dance.

Over the course of the day, rehearsals, classes and behind-the-scenes exclusives will be streamed for free, offering glimpses of ballet’s biggest stars and up-and-coming performers. Following on from the success of last year, when 50 companies took part, World Ballet Day will showcase the very best of the art form, both in terms of its long history and its vibrant future.

The line-up includes 14 companies that will be participating for the first time, including Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, Joffrey Ballet and The Washington Ballet. They will join a list of returning favourites: American Ballet Theatre, Paris Opera Ballet, National Ballet of Japan, Cape Town City Ballet and over 50 others. A full list is available on the #WorldBalletDay website.

From The Australian Ballet audiences can expect a full class, complete with commentary by Artistic Director David Hallberg, followed by rehearsals for DanceX – a three-part festival featuring nine dance companies, that showcases the depth, range and diversity of the nation’s dance community.

The 4-hour segment, streamed from Melbourne, will also include rehearsals for Romeo and Juliet, and for two new works: Annealing, choreographed for the Instruments of Dance triple bill by Resident Choreographer Alice Topp, and Justin Peck’s Everywhere We Go.

The Australian Ballet will be streaming from 11am-3pm (Australian Eastern Daylight Time).

This year’s World Ballet Day hosts will be Jarryd Madden and Livinia Nixon. Jarryd is a Senior Artist with the Australian Ballet. This is Jarryd’s second time hosting World Ballet Day. After a guest stint with The Australian Ballet during the 2007 season of Peter Wright’s The Nutcracker, Jarryd officially joined the company at the beginning of 2008; he was promoted to coryphée in 2011, to soloist in 2015 and to senior artist in 2017.

Livinia is an Australian television presenter, author and ballet fan, and currently Channel 9’s chief weather presenter.

“World Ballet Day is the chance to see the beauty of ballet, expressed right before you in the most close up way,” says David Hallberg – Artistic Director, The Australian Ballet.
