‘Fresh Tracks’ returns for its 10th year at Darwin Fringe Festival

Darwin’s arts community will see new dance works presented as part of Fresh Tracks, now in its 10th year as part of the Darwin Fringe Festival. Run by Tracks Dance Company, the program provides selected local artists with the opportunity to share experimental pieces or works in progress at the company’s studio space in Darwin.

The initiative forms part of Tracks Dance Company’s Development Program. It supports independent artists by offering studio space, creative guidance, mentoring, and production assistance. Performances are followed by an artists’ talk, giving audiences insight into the choreographic processes involved.

This year’s program features four works. Horror Noir #1 by James Mangohig explores darker themes through sound, movement, and storytelling. Drawing on his Filipino cultural background, the piece reflects on how all cultures have deeply unsettling stories often used to teach important lessons and remind us of the darker aspects of life. Iselle Chua performs as lead dancer.

Senior dancers present Generating Divergence #4 with Kelly Beneforti, David McMicken, and Alyson Evans. Developed from improvisational scores and storytelling, this collaborative performance involves Marian Patterson, Ellen Hankin, Darryl Butler, Clare Heath, Natina Demetriou, Di Lucas, Katrina Harding, and Nikki Charlesworth Canning. The work continues the ensemble’s exploration of the ageing body, capabilities, stories, and cultural differences across generations.

Face Value, a collaborative work by Marita Smith, Maari Gray, Merrilee Mills, and Bryn Wackett, traverses the seen and unseen landscape of the aging human face.

Finally, Tap Katz by Rachael Wallis is a tap dance extravaganza created with the newest dance troupe. The piece highlights how tap brings much-needed joy to the world, especially in challenging times.

Fresh Tracks aims to help develop both artists and local dance audiences. The two performances are scheduled for Sunday, July 19, 2026, at 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm at the Tracks Dance Studio, with each show running approximately one hour. Tickets are available via the Darwin Fringe website.
