FORM Dance Projects presents Luke Murphy workshop this spring

FORM Dance Projects is excited to host an intensive workshop with acclaimed director and performer Luke Murphy this spring, offering dancers, actors, and theatre makers a rare opportunity to deepen their craft through physical exploration and theatrical inquiry.

Drawing on his extensive experience as the director of Attic Projects, whose works include Volcano (2023) and Scorched Earth (2025), alongside a distinguished performance career with companies such as Punchdrunk and Ultima Vez, Murphy will lead participants through methodologies that bridge movement and theatrical storytelling.

The four-day workshop, running from 29 September to 2 October at Carriageworks in Sydney, begins by building powerful physical tools. Participants will expand their spatial reach, harness forces like gravity, coil, momentum, and drifting, and develop efficiency in muscular effort. Complex sequences will challenge balance and upend expectations, creating a foundation of broad physical availability.

From there, the work shifts into more demanding territory. Participants will apply both new and familiar skills in unfamiliar physical, emotional, and psychological directions. Drawing on adaptations of Stanislavski systems, the workshop examines the interplay between movement, purpose, and meaning for both performer and audience.

The workshop embraces the creative process in all its intensity: chaotic, vulnerable, fragile, violent, exciting, intimate, and volatile. It directly interrogates fundamental conflicts inherent to the theatre space: the friction between the performer and the content; the contradiction between spatial awareness and the internalization required to realise a character; the conflict between sound, action, and imagery; and the hostility between the controlled atmosphere of the theatre and the unbridled chaos of human nature.

Following the public workshop, Luke Murphy will invite four selected performers to join him and Attic Projects company members for a paid five-day Research & Development period focused on the new project Ingenium. This intensive will involve creating and refining movement material, dramaturgical exploration of the script and characters, and experimentation with staging and the integration of multiple languages into a cohesive performance vocabulary.
