FORM Dance Projects and Riverside Theatres present INTERSECTIONS: Street Dance X Theatre
INTERSECTIONS: Street Dance X Theatre is a double bill of Sydney’s top female led street dance groups featuring Kinetic Illusions by Oh Sheila and INTERFLOW by Destructive Steps Dance Association.
Inner-West Sydney’s all female power-house street dance crew Oh Sheila transforms the theatre into a complex and multifaceted world, challenging the audience’s understanding of our perceived reality in Kinetic Illusions. Inspired by their Asian heritage, the dancers experiment with the playful manipulation of history, time and space and the effects that this has on physical movement and the physical world around us.
“As humans, we exist within space and time, and our experiences of these concepts shape our understanding of the world around us. Our perception of space and time is largely shaped by our physical senses and our ability to perceive the passage of time.” – Beverley Li and Tiffany Nung
Expanding their work to the performance space, Destructive Steps Dance Association’s INTERFLOW follows the journey of four street dancers of diverse Asian backgrounds as they explore and contemplate the flows within their freestyle-based dance. In play with storytelling, theatrical lighting and a range of music genres, they deconstruct and reconstruct their Hip Hop, Popping and Locking bases alongside the establishing and evolving style of Waving as they seek to find their place between past, present and future.
INTERSECTIONS: Street Dance X Theatre will be at Riverside Theatres 29-30 November. Book Now.
FORM Dance’s street dance weekend continues with Keep Stepping. Keep Stepping is a coming-of-age story about love, obsession and transformative power of performance.
Competitors dedicate their lives to winning, pushing themselves to the brink physically, mentally and in many cases financially.
Yet the sport exists in the urban fringes, largely discounted by the mainstream as a curiosity or misconceived as an Eighties hangover. But those within the world of street dance understand that it is more than this. It’s a punishing mixture of athleticism and artistic expression, which promises empowerment and respect for those who rise to the top.
Keep Stepping follows the parallel stories of Gabi and Patricia, two remarkably different female street dancers, as they train for the biggest street dance competition in Australia: Destructive Steps.
Keep Stepping will be at Riverside Theatres, Parramatta, 29 November 2024 at 5pm. Book Now.
