Fling Physical Theatre launches Building Momentum for emerging artists
Fling Physical Theatre is set to launch Building Momentum, a new three-week intensive program aimed at equipping emerging and early-career dance artists with the skills, networks and experience needed to step confidently into the professional industry.
Running Monday to Friday in the Bega Valley region, the inaugural program offers participants a rigorous schedule of studio-based movement practice led by leading Australian dance artists, alongside mentorship from FLING’s artistic team. Across the three weeks, artists will develop both technical and creative skills, take part in weekly performance opportunities in diverse spaces, and build practical career assets designed to support their next professional steps. Series 1 runs June 1–19.
Designed as a small-cohort experience, Building Momentum places equal emphasis on artistic development and connection – encouraging participants to build lasting relationships with peers and industry mentors while gaining insight into a range of contemporary dance practices. The initiative is partially subsidised through funding from Creative Australia.
Each week of the program is led by a different guest artist. Week one features Melbourne/Naarm-based choreographer Siobhan McKenna, whose award-nominated works have been presented by major organisations including Sydney Dance Company and Lucy Guerin Inc. Week two is led by independent artist Rachel Coulson, known for her collaborations with leading choreographers and her emerging choreographic practice. The final week welcomes Kimball Wong, an award-winning performer with a long-standing career at Australian Dance Theatre and extensive experience across contemporary performance.
With a program cost of $1,650, FLING is encouraging artists to seek external funding support, offering confirmation letters to assist with applications. Expressions of interest opened on March 19 and close on April 28, with early offers already underway. A second iteration of Building Momentum is also planned for late August 2026.
By combining intensive training, mentorship and real-world performance experience, Building Momentum positions itself as a significant new pathway for emerging dancers looking to build sustainable careers in the industry.
