Expressions Dance Co. collaborates with Guangdong Modern Dance Company
In mid-February, Queensland’s Expressions Dance Company will collaborate with some of China’s most talented and captivating dance artists for a unique program entitled Black. Guangdong Modern Dance Company will co-present a trio of stunning contemporary works at Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) on February 12-20.
Showcasing exhilarating physicality and beautiful artistry, Black will feature works from three leading choreographers: Natalie Weir (EDC), Liu Qi (China) and Xing Liang (Hong Kong). With sublime music and lighting, this Chinese/Australian alliance will allude to numerous tales of exploration, emotion and poetry to celebrate the cultural connection.
The first work, Sumeru, is by Guangdong Modern Dance Company Resident Choreographer Liu Qi. According to an ancient saying, a grain as tiny as a mustard seed can reveal all the wonders of Mount Sumeru. Dance, like a mustard seed, may contain many interesting stories if you care to take a moment to look inside. Qi will explore gravity, energy and temperature in this work, which “organically guides the kinesis of the body, creating a dynamic wash of exploration while in search of the mustard seed within Mount Sumeru.”
The next work, Don’t by Natalie Weir, will be a Brisbane premiere. It will explore the emotional power of words. “Words that come between us, words that inspire us and words we wish we had never said,” according to EDC’s description.
Lastly, Black by Xing Liang is about the mysterious colour that’s full of the unknown and infinite possibility. In this Chinese-Australian collaboration, Liang, alongside dancers from EDC and Guangdong, have used materials and textures seen in their lives, such as architecture, poetry and experience, to “collage the dreamlike, fleeting and ineffable charm of black.”
