The Festival of Dance gives WA dancers the chance to compete for a range of awards including four coveted and prestigious scholarships and has long been a springboard for the careers of many aspiring and pre-professional dancers in the region. Many past WA Festival of Dance prize recipients have gone on to compete in international competitions, professionally dance in companies all around the globe and gain entry into the top dance schools in the world.
This year’s Festival of Dance will be from Thursday 2 June through Sunday 5 June, with a Gala Performance on Monday 6 June. The festival will be held at Curtin Theatre at John Curtin College of the Arts.
NEW in 2023: All festival solo sections have a time limit of 2.5 minutes (excludes scholarship and ensemble sections). The Linley Wilson Scholarship will include an adjudicated contemporary class. Disqualification from adjudication will be enforced if an entrant has not registered 30 minutes prior to the section. Pointe work is not permitted in the 10-12yrs age group across all sections. The Gay Cruickshank Scholarship has been renamed the Robin Haig Scholarship.
Each of the Scholarship, Artistic Awards, and other Special Prize recipients will be invited to present one dance on stage as part of the Gala Performance. The recipients will also be required to perform as part of a short opening ‘Defile, which will be taught to the students prior to the Gala. The selected finalist ensembles for the David McAllister Cup will perform, and the Cup will be awarded. Further information about the Gala evening will be issued at a later time.
