Enter to win tickets to EDC’s ‘Carmen Sweet’
Brisbane-based Expressions Dance Company (EDC) is currently touring Natalie Weir’s hit production Carmen Sweet nationally. The tour launched October 3 and runs through November 21. [See the tour dates here.]
Weir’s version of the classic Spanish love story sees Carmen’s sultry persona represented by three separate EDC dancers. Each represents a different state of her mind and alter egos, which makes for stimulating discord and built-up dramas.
In the traditional story, naïve soldier Don Jose falls for the fiery Carmen. As he tries to tame the wild beauty, she leaves him for a famous matador, Escamillo. Soon all three characters are engrossed in their own love triangle filled with jealousy and plans for retaliation.
Performed to Rodion Shchedrin’s Carmen Suite, an arrangement of Bizet’s original Carmen score, Weir’s production is presented on a mostly bare, modernized set. The only significant prop is a replica of Salvador Dali’s famous red-lipped Bocca sofa.
