DRILL presents: The Hearth
DRILL Performance, in collaboration with The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, is proud to present The Hearth. This exciting new contemporary work dives deep into the theme of safe spaces. The 60-minute site-specific performance has been crafted by DRILL’s Company, featuring creative young artists aged 12 to 25.
The Hearth is directed by DRILL’s Artistic Director Bec Dundas, alongside creative collaborator, HK Vermeulen who is a dance artist based in lutruwita/Tasmania. Julie Waddington, theatre-maker and DRILL’s new Executive Producer joins the show as dramaturg. The soundscape is an original creation by proud pakana woman and contemporary recording artist, DENNI.
This performance invites audiences to reflect on the environments that make them feel safe, both emotionally and physically. It tackles questions like, “How do I make a space safe for myself?” and examines broader community issues such as homelessness and gender-neutral spaces.
The show aims to inspire both personal reflection and community awareness. The performance not only showcases new contemporary dance but also equips the young artists with practical knowledge on creating and advocating for safe spaces within their own communities.
You are invited to contribute to the making of The Hearth by responding to a creative prompt or question. To add your contribution, click here.
DRILL would love to read your thoughts, memories and words about safe spaces. Contributions are anonymous and may be used in the live performances at TMAG, as part of an online gallery or on social media.
The Hearth will be at The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery 30 August – 1 September. Book Now.
