Circa Premieres ‘The Art of Fugue’ this Month

Circa and the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra come together for The Art of Fugue, a new collaboration that reimagines Bach’s final work through movement, sound and space. Directed by Yaron Lifschitz, with a reorchestration by Paul Dyer for period instruments and costumes by Libby McDonnell, this is Bach pared back and physically embodied.

At its heart is a conversation between two disciplines. Bach’s complex counterpoint is reordered and revealed anew. Circa’s ensemble responds not with decoration but with presence. The result is rigorous, exposed, and searching.

“This piece begins where Bach leaves off,” says Lifschitz. “In the silence at the end of the final fugue, something essential appears. Not complexity, but clarity. Our task is to dwell in that space and listen with the body.”

The Art of Fugue is not an interpretation, but an encounter. A performance that reaches beyond resolution, towards something felt, fragile and real. This collaboration is a celebration of human potential, pushing the limits of both mind and body.

Be there and witness Bach’s musical genius combined with the daring artistry of acrobatics in a performance that embodies the ultimate in human endeavour. Join Circa in Brisbane, Melbourne or Sydney and experience new heights of musical and physical prowess.

The Art of Fugue comes to QPAC 5 August, Melbourne Recital Centre 7-10 August, and City Recital Hall in Sydney 12 -16 August.
