Australian Dance Theatre’s 2022 Season Announced

Australian Dance Theatre’s 2022 Season has been announced by Artistic Director, Daniel Riley. “Yiradhu marang mudyi galang – Hello everyone, and welcome to 2022,” says Daniel.

First up is Outside Within: A World Premiere triptych of ideas, stories and legacies by Australian Dance Theatre’s Artistic Director Daniel Riley (Wiradjuri) and Adrianne Semmens (Barkindji).

Daniel’s The Third takes as its starting point mulunma – Inside Within his 2021 RISING: Melbourne commission which explores the relationship between the Western archive and a First Nations archive, each built on differing ideologies. The Third extends these concepts by looking at the body as an archive and how we hold memories personally and collectively.

Immerse dives into the lineage of our waterways and our ancestral connection to fresh and salt water, speaking to the duality that springs from Adrianne’s connection to freshwater as a Barkindji woman, but now calling Adelaide home – saltwater country.

Performances will be at The Odeon 10-13 May and from 16 May – 4 June there will be a South Australian Tour.

Next, is SAVAGE. Performed by a multi-generational cast, SAVAGE is Daniel’s first major, full-length work for the company. A collection of ideas and eras shaped into an urgent piece of dance theatre, SAVAGE looks at personal perceptions of fundamental belief systems and our trust in believing the truths and lies that have captured our hearts and imaginations.

Working with leading director and dramaturg Kate Champion, artist Dean Cross, lighting designer Matthew Adey and composer James Howard, SAVAGE will have its world premiere on Kaurna Country before touring to Ngunnawal/Ngambri Country later in the year.

It will play at Dunstan Playhouse at the Adelaide Festival Centre 21-25 September and 29-30 at the Canberra Theatre Centre.

Concluding the season will be Cultivate. Cultivate will open the doors of ADT’s home – The Odeon – to artists from the important pillars of storytelling, visual arts, music and dance.

Grounded around ADT’s 2022 Associate Artist, Tobiah Booth- Remmers, as well as new contemporary dance work by ADT’s Company Artists, Cultivate will be the extraordinary culmination of the first year for audiences to engage with ADT’s new artistic vision.

Performances at The Odeon will take place 7-11 December.

Once again, ADT’s 2022 Company Artists are Brianna Kell, Darci O’Rourke, Jada Narkle, Ren Skye, Zachary Lopez and Zoe Wozniak.
