Ausdance ACT presents two Masterclasses with Victorian State Ballet

Ausdance ACT is thrilled to present two exclusive masterclasses featuring leading soloists from the Victorian State Ballet, Michael Scott-Kahans and Grace Kefford, held right on the iconic stage of The Playhouse at Canberra Theatre Centre. These special sessions coincide perfectly with the Victorian State Ballet’s highly anticipated return to Canberra for their enchanting full-length production of Aladdin, which will grace The Playhouse on Thursday 23 April and Friday 24 April 2026 at 7pm each evening.

This beloved ballet captivates audiences of all ages, bringing the timeless adventures of Aladdin to life through brilliant classical technique, lush costumes, breathtaking music, and captivating choreography. Created by Michelle Cassar de Sierra and Martin Sierra for the Victorian State Ballet, the production draws deep inspiration from Carl Davis’ evocative score and the legendary storytelling of Scheherazade. A truly magical highlight comes when the Genie of the Lamp dramatically emerges from a cave of dancing jewels, delivering a mesmerizing showcase of virtuosity, stunning lighting, and pure ballet splendor that creates unforgettable family moments set against the exotic backdrop of ancient Arabia.

As part of Ausdance ACT’s 2026 Workshop Series, presented with the generous support of Canberra Theatre Centre, these masterclasses give young and aspiring dancers a rare opportunity to train under company professionals in the very theatre where the production unfolds. Both sessions emphasize classical ballet technique, including barre and centre work to develop strength, precision, and artistry. The junior/intermediate masterclass, designed for dancers aged 10 to 13, runs from 3:00pm to 4:00pm on Friday 24 April 2026 and costs $45 (or $30 for Ausdance ACT members). The senior/advanced masterclass, open to dancers aged 14 and older as well as adults, follows from 4:15pm to 5:15pm the same day and costs $50 (or $35 for members). Participants in both workshops should arrive in full ballet attire, with female dancers wearing their hair securely in a bun and male dancers having theirs neatly pulled back.

Each session wraps up with a short Q&A where attendees can ask questions and gain insights directly from Michael and Grace, followed by photo opportunities to capture the special experience. These workshops offer an inspiring way to build skills, connect with the artistry behind Aladdin, and enjoy professional-level training on a real theatre stage.
