‘Singin’ In The Rain’ arrives in Sydney

Raincoats for Singin’ In The Rain Australian Tour 2016After premiering in Melbourne, Singin’ In The Rain is now arriving in Sydney this week. Running July 7-September 4 at the Sydney Lyric, Pyrmont, NSW, the production will feature actor Grant Almirall in the role of Don Lockwood for a few weeks as former leading man Adam Garcia recently suffered an injury in his calf muscle whilst performing.

Almirall has starred in many international productions around the world, and has performed the lead role of Don Lockwood in Singin’ in the Rain on its international tour to South Africa, New Zealand and Hong Kong to great popular and critical acclaim. He’s been part of the Australian company as the stand-by Don Lockwood. New Zealand critics praised Almirall’s combination of “balletic elegance…with gleeful exuberance”, his “sweet tenor voice carrying the delicate emotions of ‘You Were Meant For Me’” and his “charming and joyful rendition” of Singin’ in the Rain.

Almirall joins other cast members like Jack Chambers (as Cosmo Brown), Gretel Scarlett (as Kathy Selden) and Erika Heynatz (as Lina Lamont.) Singin’ in the Rain also stars Robyn Arthur, Rodney Dobson and Mike Bishop alongside a supporting cast of 20 of Australia’s brightest musical theatre performers.

The production recently garnered three Helpmann Award nominations, including Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical for Jack Chambers and Best Female Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical for Erika Heynatz in addition to Best Choreography in a Musical. The last nomination was no surprise as choreographer Andrew Wright had previously won Best Choreographer at the 2013 WhatsOnStage Awards for his U.K. production of Singin’ in the Rain – not to mention his nomination for Best Choreographer at the 2012 Olivier Awards.

The popular tale of Singin’ in the Rain follows the story of the first Hollywood musical, when the silver screen found its voice and left silent movies. Set in 1927, it’s centered on the silent movie star Don Lockwood, who has everything he could want, from fame to a well-publicised “romance” with his co-star Lina Lamont, but is about to be in for a rude awakening when Hollywood transitions from silent spectacles to full-sound cinematic productions. Can Don and the uniquely voiced Lina make the transition and will chorus girl Kathy Selden fulfil her dream of stardom and capture Don’s heart along the way?
