NT Dance Company continuing to grow

Gary Lang contemporary dance companyIndigenous-owned NT Dance Company has become a central part of the Northern Territory’s artistic community. It recently performed Milnjiya, Milky Way — River of Stars at the 2018 Perth Festival too, presenting a groundbreaking collaboration with the West Australian Ballet and opera singer Deborah Cheetham.

 

Artistic Director Gary Lang told NT News that the company is continuing to grow and will soon expand. He said, “We love what we do and are thinking big.”

 

Lang, who founded the company in Darwin after graduating from the NAISDA Dance College and touring worldwide with Bangarra, Dancenorth and the Aboriginal and Islander Dance Theatre Company, is thankful to the government, which has played a pivotal role in the company’s growth.

 

For example, the company freshly concluded its search to employ a part-time general manager. This new position has been funded by the Department of Tourism and Culture’s Strategic Initiatives Program. Lang shared how this is “very important if we are to grow.”

 

The company continues to be in residence at the Darwin Entertainment Centre as it prepares for its remaining 2018 season. It’s currently focused on Forbidden Love choreography.
