Left Leg Studios hosts auditions for 2017

Left Leg Studios 2017 Full Time AuditionsLeft Leg Studios (LLS), a boutique dance studio in Melbourne’s Albert Park suburb, has announced auditions for its Diploma of Musical Theatre course and Pre-Professional Program for 2017 intake. Auditions are set for October 2 and November 6.

When asked what about LLS is special, Co-Artistic Director Brooke McDowell said, “Left Leg Studios purposely keeps class sizes small, which means each student receives personalised attention and support throughout the course and after graduation when the student moves on to their next venture. We have an emphasis on teaching students to be self-sufficient by learning valuable industry skills to ensure they can create a pathway for themselves and contribute to the arts industry. We encourage creativity and uniqueness and look for work possibilities that are right for them, whether that be in performance or creating.”

LLS’s faculty includes Melissa Langton, Dana Jolly, Phillip Haddad, Michael Ralf, Matt McFarlane, Kelly Byrne, Jan Di Pietro, Mike Snell, Emily Paddon-Brown, Nicole Melloy, Kristin Keam, Mark Jones, Anna Burgess and Kiara Keiser, plus guest teachers Roger Hogman, Kim Adam, Luke Hunter and Yvette Lee.

“We are privileged to have an incredible faculty that is currently working in the arts entertainment industry and is dedicated to the studio and our students,” McDowell said. “We have a really wonderful learning environment.”

Another element that sets LLS apart is its annual full-scale musical produced by the musical theatre and dance students. “The students learn fundamental creative on-stage, offstage and backstage processes that will see them well equipped for future work,” McDowell shared.

Plus, LLS provides private singing tuition for every student and regular mock auditions to nurture the “skills and confidence they need to attract work.” According to McDowell, the diploma students “do these mock auditions fortnightly” and the younger, part-time dancers must “do them formally once a year.”

In addition, all LLS students get to partake in a range of performance opportunities, from self-devised solo cabarets to musicals, competitions, exhibitions and showcases. Some students enjoy work opportunities in the professional industry.

McDowell explained what type of dancer she’s seeking for the 2017 programs. She said, “Students who want to audition for our course should be passionate about performing arts and want to better their skills in a nurturing and productive environment. They could be interested in performing as a career, teaching as a career or creating works of their own. They may even be interested in various elements of performing arts but not know which area to specialise in….. LLS is a great stepping stone for students.”

At the October and November auditions, she’ll be looking for “students who have potential but are willing to work hard to achieve their goals.”

Dancers can prepare by “attending regular dance and vocal lessons to improve their skill set in readiness for the audition,” according to McDowell.
