Dancenorth presents 3 events in 2 weeks

Josh Mu and Rie Teranishi will perform in SpectraThis year rings in the 30th anniversary of Dancenorth as a professional contemporary dance company in Townsville! The dancers have been very busy lately – from a successful national tour which sold out three nights in Melbourne, to performing at the Australian Dance Awards in Adelaide, to preparing new works. Now Dancenorth is back in Adelaide to present the world premiere of Spectra at the OzAsia Festival.

Blending contemporary dance, Japanese Butoh, live music and digital artwork, Spectra brings together visionary artists from Japan with the Dancenorth team. Together they’ll explore the universal nature of causality – the way one thing leads to another in an endless chain of preceding causes and conditions – in this program set for Adelaide Festival Centre’s Space Theatre tonight through October 1.

Choreographed by Dancenorth’s Kyle Page and presenting performers from Butoh collective Batik in Tokyo, Spectra also features a stage design by internationally renowned digital artist Tatsuo Miyajima and a live music score by Jiro Matsumoto. Tickets are still available! Book your tickets at www.adelaidefestivalcentre.com.au. [While you’re at the Festival Centre, be sure to check out the ADT/50 exhibition.]

Dancenorth's Teegan Ollett and Shaughn Pegoraro rehearsing Sensing the Sky for TwilightImmediately following this premier season, Dancenorth will present Twilight, a free multi-site performance, back in Townsville. It’s set to feature over 130 performers from the local community! Director Prof. Cheryl Stock PHD AM and her team will perform a dance and music filled journey through the winding pathways of Jezzine Barracks from dusk to dark. Be sure to watch the magic unfold if you’re in the area on October 2-3 at 5:45 p.m.

Then, on October 6-7 at 7:30 p.m., a new dance-theatre work directed by Kate Harman, Julian Louis, Joshua Thomson and Gavin Webber will be presented at the School of Arts Theatre in Townsville. Titled Cockfight, it is woven around the lives of two men who are trapped in an office.

Dancenorth presents Cockfight by Performing LinesProduced by Performing Lines, Cockfight explodes a moment in time, as power passes between the two men and other things come into play, like grief, frustration, dependency. This dance is a show of power and youth and has been described as “an episode of The Office meets a cage fight, Australian style” by Artistic Director Julian Louis.
