Co3 premieres Raewyn Hill’s ‘the cry’

Raewyn Hill premieres 'the cry'In her first full-length work for Co3 Australia, Founding Artistic Director Raewyn Hill premieres the cry on September 15–17 at Heath Ledger Theatre at the State Theatre Centre of Western Australia as part of the MoveMe Festival. The work will exemplify her signature choreographic style and is accompanied by a new score, performed live by composer and musician Eden Mulholland.

Hill’s the cry is a work that “highlights the richness of human existence.” Viewers will follow six characters as their energies and relationships ebb and flow, with sensitive duets sitting alongside the uncompromising power of the group. Dancers include Kathryn Gurr, Mitch Harvey, Zachary Lopez, Talitha Maslin, Andrew Searle and Russell Thorpe.

Mulholland’s absorbing rhythms and captivating voice will guide the viewer through Hill’s work. The audience will be dared to “expect the unexpected and be swept away and inspired.”

Internationally commissioned, Hill is well known for creating intricate and powerful dance, which is often “underpinned by an emotional intensity.” Past the physical nature, there’s also a philosophical language exchanged between Hill and her dancers. Most recently, Hill’s choreography has been influenced by her time in Japan, with her incorporating the seven principles of Bushido: rectitude, courage, benevolence, politeness, honesty, honour and loyalty.
